Environmental Sciences

One of the main objectives of our environmental sciences department is to constantly develop and improve the sustainability of food source solutions for locations with inherent procurement restrictions. Cities, islands, and rural areas all suffer from their own, independent restrictions on food sourcing. Any applications involving transatomosheric travel would also involve such supplying difficulties, which must be accounted for less the astronauts reliant on it starve to death.

Cities across the globe are subjected to what is commonly referred to as a food desert. This issue is especially prevalent in smaller urban cities but as populations across the globe continue to inflate, the problem will only grow exponentially.

The Food and Agriculture Organizations of the United Nations (FAO) has firmly concluded that “focusing on food security, nutrition and livelihoods in urban and peri-urban areas is a pre-requisite for helping poor city-dwellers attain a healthier life, and enable city authorities and local governments to broaden their strategy towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals.”

Food deserts are just one developing phenomena caused by the rapid population growth of humanity experienced in the previous century. .

The reliability of these food sources is also extremely consequential as any minor interruptions could require the depletion of emergency resources.

In space, the necessity of having a reliable food source that can accompany the individuals it is feeding cannot be understated for missions with an extensive duration.

We are also involved in the study of diverse world food markets as a means of obtaining an objective understanding of human food trends.

Our environmental sciences department is dedicated to finding “sustainable” food source solutions. Sustainability will be dependent on the efficiency of “available” resource usage to grow and harvest the food sources as well as the modification of the plants themselves (*ref to biological sciences department*). The availability of materials

One of the methods that is maximizing the efficiency of resource use is the Aeroponics System. This system is being utilized to provide a plant with its optimum water, nutrient, light and gas intake within a controlled environment. We also test how stresses on these different environmental factors effect the plant growth so we can achieve the most efficient possible ratio of resource use to harvestable yield.

a supplemented vegan diet would most likely have to be adopted out of necessity though bees, aquaponic fish and chicken could provide a good source of potential for animal products. Dead bees/ growing insects could also feed chicken/ fish
